DAY

CUSCO – RAINBOW MOUNTAIN TOUR (VINICUNCA) – CUSCO

Your day starts early with a 5:00 AM pickup from your hotel in Cusco. Sit back and enjoy a 2-hour scenic drive through beautiful valleys and small Andean villages on your way to the town of Cusipata. There, you’ll stop for a freshly made breakfast at a cozy local restaurant, surrounded by views of the snow-capped mountains.

After breakfast, your driver will take you another 90 minutes up the valley to the trailhead. The hike begins at around 4,650 meters (15,255 ft). From here, you’ll start your 90-minute trek to Rainbow Mountain with your guide. If you prefer not to hike the full way, there’s an option to rent a horse to carry you most of the way — but the final 20-minute stretch to the top must be done on foot, to reach the summit at 5,040 meters (16,535 ft).

At the top, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of Vinicunca, also known as Rainbow Mountain, famous for its vivid natural colors — deep reds, bright oranges, golden yellows, greens, and even hints of blue. These stripes are formed by mineral-rich rock layers, making this one of Peru’s most unique landscapes.

You’ll also get views of the nearby Red Valley, a dramatic stretch of rust-colored hills formed by iron-rich soil — a stunning contrast to the colors of Rainbow Mountain.

After soaking in the scenery and snapping as many photos as your heart desires, you’ll make your way back down the trail with your guide. Your driver will be waiting to take you back to Cusipata, where you’ll enjoy a well-deserved lunch and some time to relax.

The tour wraps up with a comfortable 2-hour drive back to Cusco, with an estimated arrival at your hotel around 4:00 PM — full of memories (and photos!) from one of the most colorful places on Earth.

F.A.Q.s

What is Rainbow Mountain and why is it so colorful?

Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca, is a stunning natural formation in the Andes, famous for its vibrant stripes of red, orange, yellow, green, and blue. These colors are caused by layers of mineral-rich sediment that have been exposed over time — it’s like a real-life painting created by nature!

How hard is the hike to Rainbow Mountain?

The hike is moderate but challenging, mainly because of the high altitude. You’ll start around 4,650 meters (15,255 ft) and reach the summit at about 5,040 meters (16,535 ft). It’s a 90-minute uphill walk, but you can also rent a horse for most of the trail if you prefer.

Do I need to acclimate before visiting Rainbow Mountain?

Yes! It’s highly recommended that you spend at least 2–3 days in Cusco before doing the hike to let your body adjust to the altitude. This will make the experience much more enjoyable and help you avoid altitude sickness.

Can I visit Rainbow Mountain in just one day from Cusco?

Absolutely! Most tours are full-day trips from Cusco. You’ll leave early in the morning (around 5 AM) and return by late afternoon, so it’s perfect for travelers who want to experience the Andes in a single day.
