☝ Recomendations

  • In excess of 6000 meters. Of walking and over 150 kilometers of climbing, even the short 8-day Classic Circuit (let alone the 11-day version) is a significant and challenging undertaking. Only those in excellent physical shape or those who anticipate completing it in eight to twelve days (the Classic route) are advised to attempt it.There are two lengthy, exhausting climbs on the circuit, along with a cruel little climb back to Chiquian at the finish. The first ascent of the Rio Llamac begins at 2750 meters, from 30 km to 4700 m. The climb is very long but steep, only at the very top and in short sections. The second climb is a relentless 1100m ascent with extreme steepness. 7 km above Huayllapa, then leveling off close to the summit.Make sure the adventure company you choose for your trekking tour is reputable, high-quality, has well-trained guides, and makes strict sustainability concessions.

F.A.Q.s of the Tour

What is the Huayhuash Trek, and where is it?

The Huayhuash Trek is a multi-day high-altitude trek through the Cordillera Huayhuash, a remote and dramatic mountain range in the Andes of northern Peru, south of Huaraz. It’s known for its snowy peaks, turquoise lakes, and wild, untouched landscapes. Many people say it’s even more beautiful — and more remote — than the famous Cordillera Blanca.

How long is the Huayhuash Trek?

The classic Huayhuash circuit takes around 8 to 12 days, depending on your route and fitness level. It’s about 120–140 km (75–87 miles) in total and involves multiple passes over 4,700 meters (15,400 feet). Some people do shorter versions (4–6 days), while others do the full loop.

How hard is the Huayhuash Trek?

It’s challenging, mainly due to the altitude and length. You’ll be hiking high every day — most of the trek is above 4,000 meters (13,000 feet). There are steep climbs, long days, and basic camping conditions. But for experienced or well-prepared hikers, it’s totally doable and incredibly rewarding.

Do I need a guide or can I do it solo?

You can do it independently, but many people choose to go with a guide or trekking company, especially for logistics, food, mules, and safety. The region is remote, and weather or altitude issues can be serious. A guided trek lets you focus on the experience while someone else handles the tough parts.

When is the best time to hike Huayhuash?

The best season is the dry season, from May to September. This is when you’ll have clear skies, crisp views, and safer conditions. June and July are especially popular for great weather. Avoid the rainy season (November to March), as trails get muddy and visibility drops.
