Cusco | KM 104 – Chachabamba – Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate (Inti Punku) – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes

Early Morning Start from Cusco

Your journey kicks off bright and early in Cusco. You’ll be picked up right from your hotel and driven through the Sacred Valley to the Ollantaytambo train station. From there, enjoy a beautiful train ride through the mountains to KM 104—the starting point of your hike.

Begin the Trek at KM 104

At KM 104, you’ll meet your guide and set off on the trail. The hike begins with a gentle climb, giving you incredible views of the surrounding peaks and the Urubamba River winding below.

Visit to Chachabamba

The first stop along the way is Chachabamba, an ancient Inca site that once served as a checkpoint on the way to Machu Picchu. Your guide will explain its history as you explore the ruins and admire their preserved stonework.

Hike to Wiñay Wayna

Next, the trail leads you through lush cloud forest and up a series of stone staircases. After a few hours, you’ll arrive at Wiñay Wayna—one of the most stunning Inca sites, complete with terraces, water features, and sacred temples.

Scenic Lunch Break

Take a well-deserved break with a packed lunch while soaking in the views of Wiñay Wayna and the surrounding landscape. It’s the perfect spot to relax and recharge.

Reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku)

After lunch, continue your hike toward the Sun Gate, known as Inti Punku. As you approach, you’ll catch your first breathtaking glimpse of Machu Picchu—a magical moment that will stay with you forever.

Descend to Aguas Calientes

From the Sun Gate, it’s a downhill walk to Aguas Calientes, the town nestled at the base of Machu Picchu. Once there, you’ll check into your hotel, enjoy dinner, and have the evening free to explore and unwind.

Inca Trail day 2: Aguas Calientes | Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco

Sunrise Visit to Machu Picchu

Rise early for a short and scenic bus ride up to Machu Picchu. Getting there in the early morning means you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere before the crowds arrive—and if the weather’s right, catch the magical sunrise over the ancient citadel.

Guided Exploration of Machu Picchu

Once inside, your guide will lead you on a fascinating tour of this world-famous site. You’ll visit iconic spots like the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana stone, and the Room of the Three Windows, learning about the history and mystery behind this Inca masterpiece.

Time to Discover on Your Own

After the guided portion, you’ll have free time to explore at your own pace. If you’re up for it, you can hike up Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain—both offer breathtaking views and a new perspective of the site.

Return to Aguas Calientes

In the afternoon, hop on the bus back down to Aguas Calientes. You’ll have time to enjoy lunch and maybe pick up a few souvenirs before heading to the train station.

Journey Back to Cusco

From Aguas Calientes, you’ll catch the train back to Ollantaytambo. Then, relax on the scenic drive back to Cusco, where you’ll arrive in the evening—tired but full of unforgettable memories. Time to rest and reflect on your amazing adventure!

F.A.Q.s of the Tour

Is it necessary to acclimatize to the altitude in Cusco?

Yes, Cusco is at 3,400 meters above sea level, so it is common to suffer from altitude sickness (soroche). It is recommended:

  • Rest upon arrival.
  • Drink coca tea.
  • Avoid heavy meals and alcohol.
Is it safe to travel to Cusco?

Yes, but as in any tourist destination, it is advisable to be careful with belongings in crowded places and avoid walking alone at night in poorly lit areas.

Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

Yes, tickets to Machu Picchu are limited (especially for Huayna Picchu) and it is advisable to book at least 1 or 2 months in advance.

How many types of tickets are there and which one to choose?

Machu Picchu only: To visit the citadel.

Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu: Breathtaking views; limited to 200 people per day.
